A new age of Tomsk Polytechnic University
Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) is the oldest Siberian engineering university, a leading technical university in the system of Russian engineering education and a perspective leader of the world higher education. This year TPU will celebrate a great anniversary: 110th anniversary of its foundation and the centenary of the first graduation of Siberian engineers.
TPU contributed much to the development of the Russian intellectual potential, economic, research and education and cultural development of Siberia. The University has turned out about 130,000 top-level specialists, including such prominent inventors, discoverers, outstanding scientists, and politicians as Nikolai Nikitin, a designer of Ostankino television tower in Moscow; Nikolai Kamov, an aircraft designer; Nikolai Semyonov, a Nobel Prize winner; Oleg Alimov, a designer of the device for drilling in space; Gennady Mesyats, the first Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and many others.

The University is proud of its internationally recognized scientific schools: charged particles accelerators; non-destructive testing; nuclear physics and engineering; Siberian school of geology and geochemistry; geoinformatics and geoinformation technologies; electrophysics; nanoceramic and nanocomposite materials; chemistry and chemical engineering, and others.
The University scientists contributed much to the development of Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Plant and Kuznetsk Basin, atomic power industry, electrical engineering, oil and gas resources of Tyumen and Tomsk regions. TPU is the founder of twenty technical higher education institutions and research institutes in Russia.
TPU’s achievements have been evaluated: in October 1997 the University was included into the list of the most valued objects of the Russian cultural heritage. Only eight higher education institutions hold such a status.
Pursuing its mission aimed at advancing knowledge and experience, training the highly qualified specialists and effectively bringing about innovations in the sphere of science and university education, Tomsk Polytechnic University is advancing towards its objective – to become a top international centre for professional training and innovations.
At present, Tomsk Polytechnic University includes nine institutes, nine faculties, three research institutes and over 70 research centres and laboratories, the oldest in Siberia and one of the best in Russia the University library with over 2,7 million books, military arts department, extensive network of health and recreation centres. Over 22,000 students are educated at TPU; the teaching staff includes 1,700 instructors, among them 230 Ds.Sc. and professors, and 1,000 Ph.Ds. Engineers are educated in 85 educational courses, bachelors – in 25 educational lines, masters are offered 22 degree programmes. Annually, 20 educational and laboratory buildings with lecture rooms that meet state-of-the-art requirements and are equipped with a wide range of engineering techniques, open their doors. 15 University dormitories to be the best ones in Tomsk provide conditions for study and rest.
TPU students are offered elite engineering education with profound language training. Tomsk Polytechnic University is aware of the fact that it should be oriented not only towards training an engineer but a top-level professional, a harmoniously developed individual, a specialist capable of team-working, project and entrepreneurial activities aimed at the development of competitive scientific and technical production and rapid positive changes in the Russian economics.
TPU has its own educational standard developed on the basis of the State Educational Standard and which has become the expression of the University academic policy. Its key feature is to bring university courses and curricula in line with socio-economic conditions and to pursue a new strategy for cooperation between the University and the present-day environment.
TPU was among the first Russian universities that implemented a multi-level system of engineering education. The system implemented in most countries is a key factor in TPU degrees being recognized internationally.
The TPU research infrastructure is oriented towards priority issues in Russian science and critical technologies. According to the results of research projects, TPU was among 11 Russian universities recognized as scientific organizations and received State Accreditation for this. The scope and volume of research projects carried out at TPU make up 50% of all research projects carried out in universities in Tomsk. TPU’s share of funds donated to all universities in Western Siberia for research and development makes up 20% of its R&D.
TPU has developed the system of complete innovative cycle and innovative environment. There has been opened the Innovation and Technology Centre aimed at implementation of the strategy of innovation development by means of establishing the system of innovation processes management in all spheres of the University activity. The University has established the Technological Incubator which completes the innovation chain: from research to commercialization. TPU students are involved in the process of developments commercialization and innovation activity through the Students’ Business Incubator.
At present, TPU has established a solid relationship with leading universities, research and business organizations of Russia and the world. TPU is a member of the Conference of European Schools for Advanced Engineering Education and Research (СESAER), Consortium Linking Universities of Science and Technology for Education and Research (CLUSTER), European University Association (EUA) being the ideologist of the Bologna process (unites over 700 universities) and others. The University degree programmes have been certified by the Global Alliance for Transnational Education (GATE), Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB), Open University Validation Services (OUVS). TPU was the first among Russian engineering universities to certify its quality management system according to the international standard ISO 9001:2000.
Within the academic exchange TPU students and professors are annually involved in internships in leading universities of Great Britain, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, South Korea and other countries. It is worth noting that TPU offers degree programmes to 300 international students from 15 countries as well.
The future of engineering education is in its innovative development, therefore, Tomsk Polytechnic University along with five leading Russian technical universities such as Bauman Moscow State Technical University, St.Petersburg State Electrotechnical University, St.Petersburg State Polytechnic University, South Urals State Technical University and South Urals State University has developed the conception of the innovative university.
The principles of innovative university laid foundation for the development of the University Development Programme (UDP) for 2006-2010. In accordance with the UDP, there has been defined strategic aim of the oldest technical university in Siberia for the next five years – development of TPU as the innovative university performing research and training of the world top-level specialists capable of ensuring positive changes in the area of their professional activity and finally in the Russian economic and social spheres.
Tomsk Polytechnic University is the University of innovations!
