Distance learning was first introduced in 1938 and now is successfully used in training specialists. For more than 20 years, three faculties of distance learning existed at TPU, but in 1997 they were reorganised. The Geological Exploration Faculty was fused with the Faculty of Geology and Oil and Gas Production; and Faculties of Electrical Engineering and Mechanics of Energy were introduced in the Distance Learning Centre, which in 2000 was reorganised into the Institute of Distance Learning.

The Institute constantly improves distance learning: new educational programmes and specializations are opened in the course of its work. The educational process is provided with modern computers and laboratory equipment. The Centre for Distance Technologies was opened; new teaching aids are being developed as well as video lectures and electronic textbooks. State-of-the-art information technologies are currently being implemented including the use of
telecommunication channel and Internet resources. Over 1100 of our students are trained with the use of distant technologies. To provide this, the Institute has set up the truth collection which performs the intercommunication between students and teachers by means of the up-to-date telecommunication and grants students access for educational resources. Application of interactive teaching techniques is widening, such as videoconference communication technology, for example.
The Institute includes the Centre for Distance Educational Technologies, electron text-books labs, video and audio materials. Three Branches and 11 representative offices perform their activity in 14 cities of the country. More than 9,000 students receive education at the Institute on budgetary and paid bases. In 2007, the Institute underwent the external audit of the quality management system through the National Quality Assurance (Great Britain). In 2008, 1,233 students completed their education and were awarded diplomas, including 30 honours degrees.
