On October 7, 2009, the final session of the Contest Committee on the selection of universities competing for the status of the National Research University took place.
After examination of 28 finalists’ applications, the jury selected 12 winners by secret voting; this means that every year starting from 2009 to 2018, they will receive 1.8 billion rubles funding from the federal budget for high-end research and development.
Tomsk Polytechnic University is among 12 winners and the only university in Tomsk enjoying the status of the National Research University of Resource-Efficient Technologies.
On October 7, 2009, Evgeny Butko, deputy head of the Federal Agency on Education congratulated TPU Rector Petr Chubik on Tomsk Polytechnic University winning in the contest.
Valery Fadeev, chief editor of Expert Magazine and one of the members of the Contest Committee highly appreciated TPU programme, ‘We wanted to award the status of research university not only to higher educational institutions located in the capital. We found out that some regional institutions left Moscow universities behind, and now we see that the voting results speak for themselves. For instance, Tomsk Polytechnic University and Nizhny Novgorod University were among absolute leaders’.
TPU took part in the competition called "HEI as the National Research University".
The University programme based on the outcomes of innovative activity of HEI for the period of the last three years is aimed at Human Resourcing and technological development for resource-effective economy.
The major research fields started to develop five years ago, namely:
- rational management of natural resources and advanced processing of natural resources;
- conventional and atomic energy;
- alternative technologies of power generation;
- nanotechnology and beam-plasma technologies of materials generation with the defined properties, etc.
It is noteworthy that implementation of the innovative programme was supported by additional resources.
