About the Faculty
This Faculty was founded on February 7, 1956 after the dividing the Faculty of Energy into Power Engineering and Electrical Engineering Faculties, although mechanical engineers have graduated since the Institute's establishment. More than 8,000 full-time electrical engineers have been trained by such distinguished professors as N.I. Kartashov, A.V. Ugarov, A.M. Krylov, I.I. Butakov, V.T. Yurinsky, G.I. Fuks, I.K. Lebedev, and others.
A number of graduates are now heads of prominent scientific establishments and energy enterprises and associations. V.E. Nakoryakov is the Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences; B.P. Vernavsky is the head of the National Energy Supervising Centre; V.L. Shabalin is the head of the department at the Russian joint-stock company "Unified Energy System of Russia"; G.I. Levchenko is the Hero of Socialist Labour, a member of the Board of Directors at the joint-stock company "Krasny Kotelschik" (Taganrog); V.G. Ovchar is the Chairman of the Board of Directors at the joint-stock company "ZIO-MAR" (Podolsk); O.M. Sarayev is the Director General of the "Rosenergoatom" Concern; V.M. Poplavsky is the Deputy Director of FEI (Obninsk); V.M. Levit is the Director General of the joint-stock company "Khabarovskenergo"; S.Yu. Gavrilov is the Chief Engineer of the joint-stock company “Yakutskenergo”; V. Sofiyuk is the Director General of the Khmelnitskaya Atomic Power Plant (Ukraine); O.I. Budilov, I.V. Raspopov, V.V. Muratov, E.D. Morozov, A.B. Panshin are the directors of atomic and power plants; V.V. Brukhantsev is the Director General of the small-scale enterprise "Tomskvodokanal".
The educational process at the faculty is arranged in the up-to-date educational and research laboratories and computer classes. Along with professional basic disciplines students are engaged in the environmental protection in energy; non-traditional and renewable power supplies; development of new pollution-free and wasteless energy technologies; finances, personnel management, audit, strategic and innovation management in «big» and «small» energy. Much attention is paid to the development of skills in conducting independent experimental and theoretical research. Special software is used to educate students that makes it possible to study up-to-date information technologies in the realm of heat-and-power engineering, nuclear power, thermal physics. Moreover, the in-depth study of professional foreign language is offered. The Faculty is responsible for practical training in industry both in Russia and European countries with the possibility of further job placement. The Faculty assures the full assignment of its graduates.
There are 55 instructors, and among them four professors and 31 associate professors.
Research is focused on:
- the development of equipment and operating modes of power supply sources within the structure of power supply systems;
- new methods and means of energy saving and ecological problems of power engineering;
- hydrodynamic and heat-mass exchange processes;
- the development of rational methods for coal firing of Siberian deposits;
- new materials properties;
- the development of control systems for heat engineering processes.
The quality management system has been developed, assessed and registered by National Quality Assurance Ltd. (UK).
