About the Institute

Yurga Institute of Technology was established as a consequence of the following restructuring: Educational Advisory Centre (1957) - Mechanical Engineering Faculty (1987) - Branch Campus of TPU in Yurga (1993). In 2003 the Institute became Yurga Institute of Technology, TPU.

The Institute aspires to provide machine-building industry of Kuzbass region with highly qualified engineers who have significant practical experience. Yurga Machine Building Plant is the basic enterprise of the Institute that strongly assists in solving this problem. In 2006, the Plant started to give practical training to students oriented towards the equipment industry.

Four Faculties are available at the Institute: Mechanical Engineering; Economics and Management; Evening and Correspondent Education; Pre-University Education. Students study at 11 Institutional Departments, eight of them produce specialists.

The Institute trains qualified specialists in the following educational programmes: Mechanical Engineering; Welding Fabrication Equipment and Technology; Mining Machines and Equipment; Irons Metallurgy; Servicing and Repair of Machines in the Agroindustrial Complex; Management; Applied Information Science (in economy); Business Accounting; Analysis and Audit; Economics and Management of an Enterprise (in equipment industry); Engineering Environmental Protection; Emergency Protection.

In 2009, the Institute licensed the following Bachelor’s degree programs: Technological Machines and Equipment; Metallurgy; Environmental Protection; Management; Economics; Engineering and Design Supply for Automated Mechanical Engineering.

Training of qualified specialists at YIT is performed by the integrated educational scheme ‘works-higher engineering institution’, introduced in 1987. Students combine a theoretical training with the practice in the organization departments of Yurga Engineering Works or other plants in accordance to their educational programme. One of the main advantages of this integrated training system is a quick adaptation of graduates to real work situations.

Our Institute repeatedly won the Laureate title for competition ‘UchSib’ for sustainable engineering education. Practical experience is a specific activity and a part of the educational process organized by the integrated system which implies a personal student participation in the industrial process. This system allows reducing much the period of formation of specialists who possess the required level of theoretical and practical attainments, and also provides the graduates position within the industry on the basis of their business and personal traits. During the period of education according to this system, students master four professions having passed all stages of practical training in industry beginning from the second year of study, namely: machine-operator, computer control worker, welder when senior students have already become real specialists. Economical students do their practical training as record keepers, accountant general mates, operators; senior students attend accountant courses and system administrator courses at enterprises. Still the integrated system was started 20 years ago, its main ideas and the organization approach are relevant up till now. The main components of this system can serve as a basis for the internal system of peopleware training, retraining and improvement of qualifications at engineering works of Kuzbass.

Currently, some 2,000 students study at the Institute. The material resources are presented by seven buildings with lecture rooms and over 60 well-equipped labs.

In 2009, the YIT was supplied by TPU with the equipment for education and research activity, including turning machining center ‘OKUMA’ (Japan).

38 DSc and 96 PhD holders and 32 postgraduates are involved in the educational process. Owing to its good geographical position, the Yurga-city successfully attracts lead experts in the related fields from universities of Tomsk, Kuzbass, Novokuznetsk, Novosibirsk, and the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences. Annually, the number of the academic staff is being accreted due to the intensive postgraduate courses offered by TPU.

The Institute is being involved in the development of the quality management system. Its implementation is provided by quality authorized persons from TPU organization departments (deputy deans) and also departments providing organization, financing, economic and resource management. Quality authorized persons have been educated in Siberian Certification Centre of TPU and hold Quality Manager Certificates.

The quality policy and objectives have been stated; flaw process diagram, obligatory procedures, related documents were developed. In 2010, we plan to undergo certification through the National Quality Assurance (Great Britain).

The implementation of the effective quality management system in the Institute as well as the complex system of continuing education in the field of quality will allow to risen the standards of educating specialists and their competitiveness on the labour market.

During the large period of time, the Institute has conducted the fruitful research activity. One employee carried out the DSc thesis and five - PhD theses. Annually, the Institute wins grants and awards in different scientific fields. Thus, in 2009, we won 35 research grants (5,46 million rubles); two projects were supported by the target program ‘Scientific Potential Development at a Higher School’ financed by 4,168 million rubles.

Annually, YIT participates in expositions and fairs and wins: the VII Diploma from the Fair Mechanical Engineering. Metal Working. Metallurgy. Welding – 2009 (Tatarstan, Kazan); two Diplomas from the 11th Fair Education. Career. Occupation (Novokuznetsk); four Diplomas for the best exhibit at the International Fair Innovation Economy (Kemerovo); the Diploma from The 16th Siberian Industrial Forum for its best exhibit.

In 2009 our scientists published 586 scientific papers, one text-book and seven monographs. The inventors of the Institute obtained 11 patents.

Again, three of our employees became laureates of the All-Russian competition “Engineer of the Year 2009’. In research took part 367 students, 36 of them received money by contracts and grants. Three youth scientific communities are functioning. Four patents and certificates of computer program registering were obtained; 210 scientific articles and papers were published, three of them in foreign editions and 11 in Russian.

Over 60 awards were granted at different conferences, competitions and Olympiads; 35 students are holders of Russian and regional scholarships.

Our students actively participate in university and inter-institutional Olympiads; there are five winners of the Prize.

Annually, the Institute hosts two All-Russian and two regional scientific conferences with the international participants.

The Institute closely collaborates with universities of Kazakhstan, Germany, China, Italy, Ukraine, Poland and features in the project in tandem with the School of Education of the Indiana University and International Education Foundation (USA).

The YIT intensively promotes entrepreneurial activity. Business Incubator, opened in 2007 is closely collaborating with municipal and regional enterprises in terms of innovation projects. Supported by Yurga Administration, the YIT established the Civic Innovation Centre ‘Yurga-Technologies-Innovations’ which has started its activity in 2009. Also, three small entrepreneurial enterprises ‘Svarpro’ and ‘Vector’ were opened at the Institute.

Social work is one of the priority activities performed by the Institute of Technology. It trends towards creation of socio-economic and organizing conditions and insurance arrangements for social formation, self-actualization of young people. Much attention is paid to the student self-government and student building groups. Psychological assistance is available to students and teachers.

The new concept of tutor’s activity was implemented. Each tutor works with students of department which produces specialists from the first to the last year of study. This assists teachers and students in face-to-face teaching and learning.

Creative groups, sports sections are functioning at the Institute. Our students are winners of winter and summer sports days, military applied all-rounds, swimming, volleyball and football. The sporting events conducted by the Institute are always presented at a high aesthetic level. Such competitions as The First Snow, Students Spring, University day, Youth Day are initiated by the Institute; and TV competitions Splendid Twins; Student-Girl of the Year assist students in their joining the origins of national culture. The high quality of education and its availability are provided by the appropriate planning of the educational activity at the Institute. At present, Yurga Institute of Technology is a dynamically developed organization department of TPU that aims at the integration into the Yurga Machine Building Plant and TPU departments in all fields of education, research and entrepreneurial activities.
