The University Library was opened in 1900 and is the first technical library in Siberia. Currently, it is one of the largest institutional libraries of the country. Since 2003, the quality management system has operated in the Library based on the ISO 9001-2000. The University Library is the sole institutional library in our country which has the international certificate.
The Library main activity is to provide qualitative information service for students and the university academic staff. For this, the library resources are being fully balanced with the help of search unit, resource store and users service.
The Library is a separate building with the area of 7,5 thousand m2. It includes eight reading halls capable of seating 400 people, four library loans, 11 departments.
Library resources today are 27 thousand scientific and educational editions of different knowledge scopes, including periodicals; 500 titles of home journals have been written out. 550 books have been purchased in the Russian and foreign languages concerning nanotechnologies and biotechnologies.
In 2008, about 27,000 editions were acquired for many educational programmes. Online catalog has been filled up with 28,000 records and now it accounts for 220,000 bibliographic records. Auxiliary resources of reading halls and loans contain over 320 thousand editions, including some 100,000 available to readers.
The Library is fully automated. All processes are carried out by means of electronic book delivery. Resources are listed in an online catalog, which can be accessed via the Library web server. A remote request is possible. In 2008, the Library site was visited more than 10 million times.
Online resources are presented by bibliographic and full text databases, online collection of abstracts, teaching aids written by our teachers. Teachers and students are offered the access to 61 online databases. Among them is the most prestigious scientific information resource in the world, Elsevier database, which includes over 1,800 full text journals. Moreover, our users have the access to the following databases: Theses of Russian State Library; Information legal system «Code»; Safari ProQuest Company; Springer Encyclopedias; Online Abstract Journals VINITI, and many others. All these resources are available in the electron reading hall of the Library with 80 workplaces. Most of the databases can be accesses from any computer centre TPU. The number of visits to databases in 2008 was over 195,000; the number of articles reached from international periodicals was over 28,000. The University Library offers a free service to all teachers and students of TPU.
During the past year, 94 thematic exhibitions were organized including 72 ones for the educational process; 27 literature reviews; 12 excursions. The Russian Language and Culture Decade was held on the Library basis plus five book exhibitions and literature reviews.
12 on line exhibitions were provided, namely: «From a postgraduate to a professor»; «And all this is Russia»; «What to read this autumn»; «TPU, historical stages», and others. During the past year 10 525 users have addressed to them.
For first-year students we organized the following book exhibitions: «Giving advices to freshmen»; «Nanopanorama»; «To you, freshmen»; «Independent student work: from essay to diploma».
Within the framework of All-Russian scientific conference Innovation Approach to Theory and Practice of Non*Academic Work in University the Library organized Section Library from the Non- Academic Viewpoint. More than 30 employees from institutional libraries of different cities took part in that Section.
For the purpose of the intensive use of the library information resources, junior students were offered studies on «Basics of information culture»; teachers, postgraduates, part-time students were offered group and personal tutorials; 19 Departments were offered counseling seminars.
Since 2003, the quality management system has been implemented in the Library on the basis of ISO 9001:2000. The TPU Library is the sole university library in Tomsk which was awarded the international certificate. The international certification assures the quality of the library and information support of the educational process at the university.
In 2007, the Library featured in the Innovation Educational Project of TPU. Within this Project reading hall was opened to design term and diploma papers. It places 70 computers and three lecture-rooms for group designing.
To effectively use information resources of the Library, we organized classes on basics of information culture for junior year students. Over 19 thousand group and individual consultations were provided for teachers, postgraduates and part-time students; 19 university Departments offered counseling seminars.
There are 98 highly qualified staff members at the Library including 70 % of those who has higher and professional education. Our employees confirm their professional level by participation in Russian and international conferences presenting their papers on relevant problems of library activities. During the 2008, our colleagues have presented 10 papers and 9 publications.
Besides TPU teachers and students, the Library welcomes teachers and students from other universities and educational institutions as well as specialists from Tomsk industrial enterprises and organizations.
